Tiny Reviews: DiRT

Right before God banished Colin McRae from the realm of the living, Codemasters banished him from the series that was once named after him. Dirt is the continuation of the Colin McRae Rally series, and while I can’t claim to be a longtime fan, I’d be willing to swear under oath that this game is fucking awesome.

The dune buggy and dump truck races might be miserable, and it might be aggravating that a single bump from another car can ruin your entire race, but as far as the actual solo rally racing goes: incredible.

The graphics are breathtaking (the game absolutely must be played from the driver’s seat view), the controls are exhilarating and responsive, and the structure of the career mode is very flexible, allowing you to skip the race-types you don’t like.

The sensation of tearing down some out-of-the-way backcountry trail, either alone or with a wingman, is one of the most immersive and intense experiences I’ve had with a next generation game so far. Add surround sound to the equation, and I guarantee you’ll shit yourself. I sure did.

McRae might be in DiRT now (and may God rest his soul), but hopefully that doesn’t mean DiRT will rest in peace with him.
